Aeration:
We perform core aeration to all turf areas on by core extraction. We recommend this practice as often as at least once annually though you can certainly increase the frequency if one wishes. The benefit of aeration is that it allows deeper penetration of water and nutrients, and yes, air, into the root zone. This promotes deeper rooting more vigorous growth and allows the turf to perform better through the heat. The cores that are pulled will remain on the turf surface to be mulched on the next mow. Any ‘plugs’ that fall onto sidewalks will be blown or swept off the pavement back onto the turf area.
Thatching:
The process removes most old moss, dead leaf material, etc. that can potentially be ideal locations for insect larvae, also allows better water penetration for stronger roots. We use a 'vertical power rake' to get down to or near soil level. We then collect and remove the debris and dispose of offsite. We suggest this process be performed at least once every two to three years and, though you can do this at most any time of year, generally this is best performed after treating for moss in the spring.
Over-seeding;
When we over-seed we apply a mixture of Rye and Fescue (and sometimes a bit of Bluegrass seed mix) for sun & shade. Depending on the current weather this is often followed by top dressing (with a sand and mulch mix) then seed starter fertilizer. Note, if aeration is performed with Topdressing one uses the Topdress process for both purposes. Performed from Mid-March through the end of September one would generally expect to see new lawn growth within two to three weeks - based on weather conditions.
Topdress:
Topdress with a thin layer of Topdress mix (sand and mulch) to enhance drainage and root development and as seed cover when appropriate. In lieu of sand & mulch, peat moss can be used for seed coverage. This also often follows aeration, filling in the holes and helping with water penetration for enhancing root development.
